Personal Watercraft and Jetski Insurance - FAQ
Can I arrange insurance on behalf of someone else?
No. This facility is to be used strictly by private individuals for their own use, i.e. to obtain a quotation and arrange insurance for their own Personal Watercraft.
My PW is based outside of the UK. Can I still insure it with RJP?
No .We currently only insure craft based in the UK (inc. N Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands) with 30 days holiday use in Europe.
Can I insure any other type of boat with RJP Marine?
Yes, but not currently via this site. Please contact us by phone or email.
How long will it take to insure my craft?
On average we think it will take 2 minutes to get a quote and a further 5 to 10 minutes to arrange the cover and pay for it.
My current insurance doesn’t expire until next month. Can I still buy insurance now?
Yes! Simply enter the date you want cover to start in the appropriate box and if that is no more than 30 days ahead the quotation and cover will be valid. Please note that should anything change in the intervening time, e.g., accidents occur, locations addresses change etc. then you must let us know.
What does 'Save for Later' mean?
It may be that you cannot decide whether to go ahead there and then or don’t have all of the information you need to hand. If you complete the quotation stage you can simply click “Save for Later”, log off and then come back to the quote when you are ready. This will avoid doing everything again.
I want to insure my Personal Watercraft but don't know its serial numbers.
You can still obtain a quotation from us but without these numbers we cannot go on cover. You can save the quote, find out the numbers and then complete the cover later.
Where are the serial numbers located?
The location of serial numbers varies slightly from manufacturer to manufacturer but generally the hull number is at the rear of the hull of the craft on a small riveted plate in a central position just above the bond line. Engine numbers, not surprisingly, are found on the top of the engine casing. The numbers have a specific sequence of numbers and letters and should always be in the same place and form as when the craft was brand new. If in doubt ask your dealer.
SECURITY Will my credit/debit card details be secure?
This site is powered by the SEcPay payment system.
SECPay provides all the security required for the transmission and storage of card details
using SSL, encryption minimum 40 bit and firewalls.
If you require any further information regarding the security of SecPay systems, please visit
the SecPay site.
Can I insure more than one craft?
Yes , but you will need to effect two separate policies and so get two quotations.
If I cancel my policy will I get a refund of premium?
There is no return on the liability portion of the premium but a full pro rata refund will be allowed on the damage section. For a £6000 craft the split in premium (not taking into account any discounts) would be £260.19 damage and either £167.50 or £193.75, depending on the HP, for liability. Cancellation after 6 months would produce a return of £130.10 making the cost for the 6 months £297.59 or £323.84. The public liability cover is most needed or used when the craft is in use usually during our often short summers. Allowing return premiums for some PW owners who choose to only insure for that time would have an upward effect on premiums for everyone else hence we try to discourage short term cover. Of course if you are simply changing your craft we just note the policy and will charge or refund premium according to the value and HP of the replacement craft.
How do I get a RYA qualification and what are the benefits?
The RYA run PW courses at many locations throughout the UK. A list of their training schools can be found by following this link to their website. If you have just purchased a new PW from an authorised dealer in the UK then you will have been given a voucher which can be exchanged for £50 once you have taken the course. This will pay up to half of the cost of the course! Once taken RJP will allow a 10% discount off your first or next renewal premium. Of course the major benefit from taking the course is that you will get more out of the use of your craft and will be safer as well!
How old do you have to be to get insurance?
Our usual minimum age is 16 years but younger RYA qualified riders may be included on the policy upon referral to us. Youngsters from 12 to 15 years can take the RYA course and upon successful completion can apply to RJP for inclusion under the policy. The cover provided, if the rider is accepted, is subject to the supervision rules of the RYA qualification for young riders which will be made clear on the course. Essentially younger users, under 16, must be supervised (not necessarily accompanied) at all times. No cover will be in place for under 16’s until specifically agreed by RJP.
How can I pay my premium?
You may choose to pay by cheque in full, the cheque must reach us within 7 days of cover being effected, by Finance Agreement over 8 monthly instalments by Premium Credit Finance through your bank or by Credit or Debit card. Premium Credit Limited are the finance providers for the monthly instalment arrangement and they will apply a charge of 7.5% (28.6%APR) to your premium. No deposit is required. The arrangement is regulated under the consumer credit act of 1974.
Why do you take a Credit / Debit card number no matter which payment option I choose?
We provide you with immediate cover from this website and allow you to print a cover note. We have to take a card number to validate the transaction to ensure that premium has been promised and that the cover note is therefore valid. We will not debit the card unless it is the chosen payment method or a cheque is not received / does not clear or the Financial Agreement defaults. We will however tell you before any money is debited to your card and provide you with a full explanation of the charge being made.
Who Are R.J.P. Marine?
RJP Marine manage the largest and longest established personal watercraft (jetski) scheme in the UK. The first craft, "wetbikes" back then, were insured in 1983 with the Royal Insurance Group.
After a year or so it became clear that “Jetskis”, the Kawasaki manufactured stand up craft, would be the major type of this form of boat and the scheme was adapted to include them.
RJP, having recognised the opening for a niche market after almost stumbling on the Wetbike connection, made contact with everyone remotely associated with the sport, from manufacturer/importer to the end user. As with anything some of those involved would only be in it short term whilst others would create a long term future.
It was imperative to forge relationships with the latter sector and it is testimony to the choices made at that time that RJP still have extremely close working relationships and friendships with all of those contacts.
RJP have acted for the various trade and racing associations over the years and have contributed centrally to the development of the personal watercraft industry latterly through the British Marine Federation and Personal Watercraft Partnership , of which we are one of the founder members. RJP are regarded as THE personal watercraft insurance experts.
RJP are based in North Lincolnshire and are part of the Johnstone Insurance Brokers Ltd ‘Group’. In addition to the 3 directors, all involved on a day to day basis, 15 people are employed overall
Many staff have been with the company for over 10 years, some since the business commenced and a thorough training programme is in place for new staff. The training regime fully embraces continuing professional development of all those involved. The business is authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority - Registration number 452604
RJP are at the forefront with IT. From the 2nd September 2002 the Company became part of the Willis Commercial Network taking on with that a fully networked PC system with internet and email access to all desktops.
RJP Marine will continue to provide expertise to the industry in general and to our clients in the form of exceptional service. The very important work with the PWP will continue and will provide the ultimate benefit to personal watercraft users , that is , the freedom to launch and use their craft in a safe environment without causing nuisance to others.
All processes are currently mechanised and specific IT developments relating to the PW scheme are underway. This Online facility is only the start of a new period of technological development.
